Biggles follows Erich into Bohemia to rescue his first and only love Marie Janis.
The tale starts with Erich reporting to Biggles that he's just received a letter from Marie, and she's in trouble. Erich sets off to her homeland (Bohemia, now behind the Iron Curtain) and then disappears. That is until a postcard is received and Biggles knows which bar to frequent to locate his friend, now posing as a violinist in the band (is there no end to that man's talents?).
With Bertie by his side Biggles and Erich manage to locate Marie under house arrest in her family castle because she refuses to give up the location of the nation's royal jewels. But soon Erich's past catches up with first him, and then Biggles, and both end up in hiding while waiting for Bertie to return with an aeroplane to whisk them away. That he manages to finally do, accompanied by Ginger.
From there, after some dubious customs procedures overseen by Marcel Brissac, they all return to England to live happily, but separately, ever after. Marie managed to smuggle out some serious jewels and with the proceeds of selling off some of them purchases a cottage in Hampshire where Biggles and Erich regularly visit.
