| jason | A great story. Biggles is barely back into civvies and hits the ground running in a new role with the ever-present Colonel Raymond. Assigned as the worlds first air-borne policeman, he and the lads are soon hitting the breeze in search of organised crime. naturally, with the war barely over the first targets were always going to be disenfranchised germans. Johns himself may have reflected the harshness of the times, because this book is uncharacteristically graphic in it's handling of violence. Very much one of the more adult-friendly titles, it's one of the highpoints and equal in quality, though different in style, to the better 1930's books. A fantastic way to leap into the second half of Biggles career. [edit my review] |
| CraigMiles | This is in my top 10... a great cover, the fall out from the war, the reintroduction of Wilks. An altogether more serious book than many in the series and so it stands out for this. I think this one and Second Case are equally brilliant in the Air Detective series, and I really wish this quality would have continued. Happy to discuss at craig.miles@infuse.it [edit my review] |
| bertie | The Second World War has just ended, and Biggles is drafted directly from the RAF into Scotland Yard, as an Air Detective. His first case is to hunt down a flying gang of jewel thieves, who are lifting goods and disposing of them on the other side of the world before they're noticed missing. In what must be a record, Biggles has them identified by page 20, and spends the rest of the book chasing them down. Entertaining jaunt takes them from occupied Germany to North Africa and onto Abyssinia. One of the ten best Biggles books published, IMO. Rather brutal book, with the several murders graphically depicted. Wilks welcome reappearance lightens the tone with some banter between old comrades, and Bertie is involved in a deadly dogfight. Top shelf Biggles. [edit my review] |
| Brian | Well, I always liked this one. The first of the 'Air Detective' stories, and not a bad one at that. Biggles and the crew are sent to hunt down a missing Nazi aircraft designer, who has disappeared, along with his planes. An interesting account of a dog-fight, between Bertie & the Nazi, whilst Biggles watches from the ground. Apart from a few notable exceptions, it was all down hill from here. [edit my review] |
